The Lord Jesus healed the sick:
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.
(Matthew 4:23)
The 12 apostles healed the sick:
1 Then He [Jesus] called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 2 He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
(Luke 9:1-2)
Jesus instructed 70 other disciples to heal the sick:
And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
(Luke 10:9)
All believers can heal the sick:
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
(John 14:12)
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
(Mark 16:17)
So how can we heal the sick? Lets look at the principles in Jesus’ healing ministry:
1. Jesus was dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit
38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
(Acts 10:38 )
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself…
(John 5:19)
Jesus couldn’t heal anyone in His own power. He was completely dependent on the Holy Spirit’s power to heal. The good news is that we all have access to the same power:
8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you
(Acts 1:8)
2. Jesus knew that God wants people to be well
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner
(John 5:19)
Jesus only did what He saw the Father do, which means that everything Jesus did was the will of the Father. Interestingly Jesus never refused to heal anyone that came to Him. Jesus never questioned if it was God’s will for them to be healed, He healed them all. This means that Jesus understood that it is God’s wants people to be well.
…healing all who were oppressed by the devil
(Acts 10:38 )
3. Jesus heals because He loves people
If someone you loved were sick, and you had the ability to heal them, wouldn’t you heal them? Jesus loves people, and He heals people because He loves people:
14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.
(Matthew 14:14)
40 Now a leper came to Him, imploring Him, kneeling down to Him and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
41 Then Jesus, moved with compassion, stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” 42 As soon as He had spoken, immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed.
(Mark 1:40-42)
4. Jesus understood that things can hear
18 Now in the morning, as He returned to the city, He was hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.” Immediately the fig tree withered away.
20 And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither away so soon?”
21 So Jesus answered and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but also if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ it will be done.
(Matthew 21:18-21)
What was Jesus doing speaking to the fig tree? He spoke to the fig tree because He knew that it could hear Him. It heard, and responded.
It is important to know that sickness and pain can hear you!
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”
(Matthew 17:5)
I heard one preacher comment on this verse that here God commanded all creation to Hear His Son. In the Greek, the word “hear” is:
a) In the active voice, which means that everything is to actively listen to Jesus
b) In the plural i.e. the commanded is to be obeyed by all creation
When we speak in the name of Jesus, all creation has to hear! We are the body of Christ.
5. God wants people to participate in their healing
13 Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other (Matthew 17:13)
Jesus wanted the above man to participate in his healing by stretching out his hand. When Peter walked on water, Jesus didn’t pick him up and place him on the water. Jesus simply said, “Come”:
28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
(Matthew 14:28-29)
Jesus wanted Peter to participate in the miracle. Jesus also wants us to have faith:
22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.
(Matthew 9:22)
Other principles:
6. We are the body of Christ – Jesus will continue to heal the sick through you and me.
Luke opened the book of Acts by saying the following:
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was taken up…
(Acts 1:1-2)
In the above verses, Luke is talking about the Gospel of Luke. He describes the Gospel of Luke as consisting of the things that Jesus began to do before His ascension. The book of Acts consists of what Jesus continued to do through His Church. Jesus will continue to heal the sick through His body, the Church i.e. you an me!
7. Jesus has all authority, which means that the devil has none!
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
(Matthew 29:18 )
The devil has no authority (legal right) – Jesus has all authority. This means that when the devil puts sickness on people, it is illegal! As the body of Christ, we have the authority to drive that sickness out.
He Himself [Jesus] likewise shared in the same [flesh and blood], that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil
(Hebrews 2:14)
This verse reveals that the through the Cross, the devil has been destroyed. The devil is a defeated enemy who has no authority, and it is our privilege to drive out sickness and disease from people.
There isn’t an exclusive formula for healing people, Jesus ministered differently to differently people. But here’s an approach you can use. I have guided people through this approach after praying for the healing anointing to be released on those who want to heal the sick.
1. Ask the person what the problem is.
2. Assure the person that Jesus loves them, and therefore will heal them
3. Ask the person if they believe that when you minister to them they will be healed
4. Ask the Holy Spirit to come upon the affected area. Lay hands on the area if appropriate. Sense the presence of the Holy Spirit coming on that area.
5. Command the sickness / pain to go, saying “Out! In the name of Jesus”.
6. Immediately ask the person to test the affected area.
This is not a formula, always be led by the Spirit. Always minister in love, and never try and make someone feel bad if you don’t think that they have faith. Let the perfect love of Jesus flow through you.
Free Video
I would strongly recommend that our video recording, where I taught on this subject at a church crusade:
The video recording includes:
•Me teaching for 38 minutes on that fact that you can heal the sick, and showing principles from Jesus’ healing ministry
•A prayer for the healing anointing to be released to those who want to heal the sick
•A demonstration of how to heal the sick
•Testimonies from people who received healing in that meeting
The Anointing
I would also strongly recommend that you get my book called “The Anointing: See God’s supernatural power in action through you”. As the title suggests, this book will equip you to see God’s supernatural power function through you.
